Colic ( intestinal pain)
Spasmodic colic is the most common type of colic and is caused by the intestines becoming over active for some reason, to the extent that it is sometimes possible to hear increased rumbling from the abdomen.
Causes Impaction of the large intestine, where the intestine is blocked by food material which can be brought on by
- may be caused by changes to the diet
- irregular feeding or where the horse suddenly starts to eat its bedding
- inadequate deworming
- teeth problems which may have resulted from poor dental care
- changes in exercise patterns perhaps, for example, where a previously active horse has to be confined to the stable for box rest
- Impaction maybe avoided when feeding changes are made gradually and when the horse always has access to plenty of fresh water.
Colic emanating from the stomach
- Most commonly associated with ulcers or distention the former are more commonly associated with young stock, especially foals, when they are suffering from other concurrent diseases such as scour for example
- Can be very painful
- May occur after a rapid and excessive feed of grass or concentrates
- Mares after foaling can be at an increased risk of getting this type of colic
Possible Outcomes
- Displacement of the intestines within the abdomen is quite rare but can occur when a part of the intestine becomes trapped in the wrong part of the abdomen
- Frequently these colics require surgical correction
- By far the most painful and dramatic of the colic types is when a part of the gut gets twisted and this is a very serious condition usually requiring surgical correction relatively quickly to save them
Natural Solutions
- While this colic can be very dramatic it can be resolved quickly with aid of the homeopathic Colic treatment. i.e. one dose every 5 mins. Usually by the second dose the horse is feeling calm and relaxed again
- With chronic pain off and on we recommend using the pills in their drinking trough once a week it is safe for other animals sharing the same trough
- These remedies work quickly and well in many acute and chronic colic conditions.
