Feline Herpes Virus FHV-1 (Rhinotracheitis)
Feline rhinotracheitis virus (feline herpes virus type 1 or FHV-1) causes acute respiratory illness known as rhinotracheitis (or feline herpes virus infection). The virus affects domestic and wild cats worldwide.
Rhinotracheitis is part of the feline upper respiratory infection complex, which is a group of viral and bacterial infections (e.g. calici virus, chlamydiosis) that cause sneezing and discharge from the eyes and nose. Cats often have two or more of these upper respiratory infections at the same time, although FHV-1 is one of the most common.
Many cats that have, at some time, been infected with FHV-1 are never completely free of the virus. These cats are known as latent carriers. Even though they may not show symptoms, they harbor the virus in their nerve cells. Latent carriers spread the infection and are a major source of new infections.
Symptoms
Respiratory symptoms such as
- Sneezing
- Nasal discharge
- Rhinitis (inflammation of the nose)
- Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the membrane lining the eyelid)
- Also affects the reproductive tract and can cause complications during pregnancy
Incidence
Cats of all ages and breeds are susceptible, although the illness is more common in
- Kittens, especially those born to infected mothers
- Multi-cat households, catteries, and pet adoption shelters, especially those with:
- Overcrowded and stressful environments
- Physical (e.g., temperature) or psychological (e.g., introduction of a new cat) stressors
- Poor nutrition (commercial foods)
- Poor sanitation
- Poor ventilation (too hot or too cold)
- Pregnant cats that are lactating - (adrenal and immune deficient)
- Sick cats (associated with a weakened immune system)
Natural Solutions
- Individual consultations using the bioscan diagnostic machine have shown that many kittens are ill with Rhino pneumonia viral infection, which is a secondary infection from the herpes virus. Breeders that had previously lost kittens because of this infection have found that using homeopathic remedies has made a significant difference to the prevention of infection and in the treatment of kittens
- Using the Feline Herpes Virus Nosode as a preventative measure will stop the continual spread of the infection
- If you think your queen maybe a carrier, using the nosode as well as the RhinoPneum formula can completely rid your cat of the virus
- This formula will assist a sick kitten or adult cat quickly, within 2 days you will see a dramatic change.
