Explanation and Symptoms
Colitis is an inflammation of the colon or lower bowel and is a complicated condition with many possible causes. The symptoms of colitis can also vary widely depending on the severity of the disease. When mild, symptoms may just be a firm first bowel motion, and subsequent soft motions throughout the day. As the condition progresses you may start to see motions covered with mucus, jelly or slime. In moderate colitis the motions have mucus flecked with blood, especially toward the end of the motion. The animal often strains unproductively after passing the motion.
If the colitis is severe then the animal may pass red to brown diarrhea which will result in rapid dehydration and collapse. This may also be accompanied by vomiting. This can be acute and natural treatment is needed as soon as possible.
Our suggestion or relief while waiting to recieve your natural medicines.
While waiting to receive the hampls Herbal Colitis formulas, start assist healing the internal bowels by using Slippery Elm Powder (from Health store) - mixed in water or goats milk (not cows)
For Example:
Mixing 1 tablesppon (or 1 teaspoon for cat/toy dog) of powder in a cup, add some filtered water (or goats milk) enough fluid to make a very runny liquid mixture, so animal can swallow it without it being too thick and gluggy.
Oral Dosage amount: for a small to medium to large sized dog or animal - each oral dose of the mixture give approx. 20ml, or 50ml for a horse or cow or 1 to 2mls for toy dog or cat or other small species.
Instructions: Using a oral syringe, gently draw up liquid and give small doses in side of mouth as a soothing healing liquid meal. Do not squirt too much liquid each dose as will cause choking and coughing. Just a small amount so easy to swallow, then repeat small amount until suggested amount is completed.
Repeat three times a day if needed and acute stress and condition. This will quickly sooth and stop lose of fluids from body. NB. we also have this instruction on the "Home Therapy" page.
Conventional: Starvation is the initial treatment advice given by a veterinarian for colitis which is similar to that for vomiting and diarrhea. However this is usually unnecessary once you start our Natural remedies and diet suggestion.
Diets which tend to protect against colitis fall into these types -Hypoallergenic diets - avoid unusual protein and carbohydrate sources that your dog is likely to be sensitive to; use foods that do not contain the allergens which affect your dog. Some foods to avoid for dogs - beef, dairy products and wheat which are common in commercial foods and kibble. High fiber/low fat diets that result in an environment in the colon which encourages the growth of "friendly" bacteria. We will provide a diet sheet guide when purchasing Colitis herbal treatments.
Clinical findings
Pancreatitis should be included in a diagnostic rule-out list whenever there is a history of lethargy, anorexia, dehydration, hypothermia, vomiting (in only 35% in one paper), abdominal pain, abdominal mass effect, dsypnea, diarrhea, and ataxia. Concurrent problems may include hepatic lipidosis, cholangitis/cholangiohepatitis, idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, enteritis, diabetes mellitus, and vitamin K1 responsive coagulopathy. As such, the clinical findings on examination may be vague. Pancreatitis is on my list of differentials for EVERY cat who is lethargic, “not himself,” inappetant and dehydrated, whether vomiting or not.
Over the years through clinic animal practise I have custom made and perfected the below natural medicine formulas that are suggested to give relief from this specific ailment. There maybe more than one formula suggest or related products, so read through each one and see if your pet or animal need - all, some or just the one formula.
Natural medicines will last several years and are suitable for all species and ages.
Instructions and diet sheet are also included with these formulas.
