Cushing’s syndrome "hyperadrenocorticism" is a common occurrence in middle-aged and older dogs.
The body’s tissues must be exposed to high levels of cortisol in order for symptoms of Cushing’s to make an appearance. There are three main reasons for Cushing’s syndrome to occur. The first is a tumor on the pituitary gland, the second is a tumor on the adrenal glands, and the third is due to your vet over prescribing of cortisone drugs such as Prednisone. In the Veterinary Industry Prednisone is most commonly used as a long term drug for conditions such as allergies or arthritis. Most of the CS cases, about 80%, are cause by a problem which effects the pituitary gland. If your dog has a Drug-induced Cushing's syndrome, you can still help your dog, buy treating the skin conditions or arthritis etc with alternative natural medicines, whilst comming off the drug through the advice of your vet.
Symptoms
No one patient displays all the signs or symptoms that are apparent in Cushing’s syndrome. One dog may have several of the symptoms, while another dog may also have several, but completely different ones than the other dog. A typical symptom is distention, or swelling of the abdomen. Yet on occasion, dogs will appear emaciated. There are many other physical and behavioral signs and symptoms which are listed below.
Homeopathy is quickly becoming a preferred alternative to conventional treatments for Cushing’s syndrome, mainly because pharmaceutical drugs create a more complicated problem than the disease itself in many cases. This occurs mainly due to the serious side effects of conventional medication used to cure Cushing’s. Homeopathic remedies, unlike conventional drugs, are devoid of side effects.
Pets that are chronically over-secreting cortisol are considered to be immunosuppressed. They can develop an infection anywhere in their bodies – wherever there is a weak link. Infections of the gums, eyes, ears, skin and the urinary tract are common.
If your dog has recurrent infections or an infection he can’t seem to get rid of, it’s possible too much cortisol is to blame.
Hampls Cushing's homeopathic and herbal formulas will be equally effective in relieving Cushing's Symptoms -whether resulting from a tumour, an overdose of cortisone or a generalised metabolic imbalance due to other causes. ie chronic stress, hyper nervy excited types of dogs. If your dog has recurrent infections or an infection he can’t seem to get rid of, or diagnosed with liver disease, then it’s possible too much cortisol is to blame. It’s very rare for cats to develop Cushing’s Syndrome.
The problem with diagnosing Cushing’s is that often, the initial symptoms (enlarged abdomen, muscle weakness, lethargy) are mistaken for old age. It’s chalked up to typical inconveniences of growing old. It’s not until very noticeable problems occur like urinating in the house, losing large portions of hair or developing unsightly skin infections, that a vet is even called. .
Generally common in Older age dogs, however certain breeds more genetically predisposed to the disorder including:
• Terriers (silkies, Yorkies, bull terriers and Boston terriers)
• Poodles
• Dachshunds
• American Eskimo dogs/Spitz

Many dogs get misdiagnosed as having a liver disease or just put down to "old age". When really they have Cushing's Syndrome, as the liver of an animal with hyperadrenocorticism gets overtaxed from trying to process the excess cortisol in circulation throughout the body. This causes an elevation in the liver enzyme alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and the inducible liver enzyme, alkaline phosphatase (ALP). It isn’t uncommon for vets to stop looking once they see the elevated liver enzymes and diagnose liver disease when the problem is actually Cushing’s.
